As a new year approaches, I hear a lot of emphasis in coaching conversations and chats with my friends, being placed on the fresh start that a new year brings. It’s a time of hope, where dreams are born and desires built. As the empty space of a new year rolls out ahead of us.
It feels so tantalising, so full of promise.
With that hope of a fresh start, I also read online endless promises selling the ultimate business blueprint, ways to attract high paying clients and formulas to explode your business (figuratively not literately I hope!) If it’s not business and money, it’s sex and love, or beauty and wellbeing. You get the picture, people selling magic formulas to life.
A rich, happy, contented life.
I hope you know me well enough to know that I’m someone who encourages you to follow your desires. That I want you to unearth your deepest dreams so you make them your reality. I hope you also know me well enough by now to know I’m unconventional. I don’t have the same message as many other people. I dare to be different.
So here are my thoughts on the transition into a new year. There’s no big promises. It’s just my perspectives, which may support you on your own journey towards a rich, happy and contented life.
The beginning and end of a year is a man-made construct
In the same way as seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and months are.
It’s a convenient way to control an unpredictable world.
The trouble with this is that life doesn’t honour these minuscule, manmade measurements. It operates on a far grander scale than we will ever be able to comprehend.
Time within time, and no time at all.
So it can help to remember,
Whatever that is for you.
Life as you know it won’t disappear on the final chime, leaving you with one glass slipper as a memento (thankfully!) Life continues, as it was, with its ups and down, triumphs and hardships. What you found difficult on one day won’t just disappear on the next because the calendar was flipped.
You have the freedom to choose
So what does this transition really mean? After all there is an ending, albeit man made, and with endings come beginnings. The good news is that now is the perfect time to make sense of your reality. It’s an opportunity to face in the truth of your life just as it is. The beauty and the joy. The challenges and responsibilities. The heartbreak and pain. The seen and the unseen.
However we often go to great lengths to avoid our reality. Our minds are masterful at creating cover stories to allow us to remain in unhappy, unhealthy, unfulfilling places. We prefer not to look at ourselves in the mirror and question who we really are, dimming our lights down so we can stay comfortably uncomfortable, fearing change more than challenging the status quo.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
As with any other day in the year, when you face your reality you have the freedom to choose. It doesn’t mean the choices will be easy, if they were there would be no need to avoid them! Power and freedom comes from stepping into a genuine choice.
When we choose to:
- be honest and admit a mistake
- be open to love
- be courageous and speak the truth
- be vulnerable and ask for help
- be daring and make a change
The more rooted you are in your reality, the more clearly you will be able to see what is happening in your life. Choices made from this rooted place of clarity don’t need to dramatic or life defining, they are often simple, heartfelt and meaningful.
Here are five ways to reflect on your year that will help you get rooted in reality. You may choose to complete one of these exercises or several – it’s up to you. Of course you can do these exercises at any time throughout the year!
Five ways to consciously navigate the New Year transition
- Look back at the significant events of the previous year, then write a letter to yourself like you are your best friend acknowledge the qualities you have that saw you through.
- Look back at the major challenges of the year, and send a thank you to the people who supported you, helped you grow and inspired you.
- Look back at all you have gained and all that you lost this year. Set up a gratitude jar to keep track of things you are thankful for in the year ahead.
- Look at what works and what does not work in your life right now. Consciously choose what you want to keep and let go of.
- Set a heartfelt intention for your year ahead. Then creatively express your intention – paint it, draw it, vision board it, whatever works for you.
